After a long hiatus, we’ve added 6 subscribers since my last post!
Welcome - due to some recent job changes I’ll be posting again on a weekly/biweekly schedule and be more active on Twitter
That being said - send me a DM on Twitter or reply to this email introducing yourself, I’m curious to know who’s reading (hi Mom!) and how I can help.

One thing I'm reading
Where to find the best business ideas (and how to build them)
I’m obsessed with novel ideas that can be easily built.
My friend Jakob Greenfeld posts great ideas (and his projects to address them) on his feed but also in his paid newsletter. He just released a MASSIVE list of ideas that he scraped from twitter that people can take on.
A few of my Favorites:

An app that replaces your crowded group text threads
I got tired of having group threads that talked about doing things on the weekend and never got plans set in motion
So I decided to make an app that would be an event planner in your pocket.
All the information on a calendar - knowing who’s going and coordinating carpool/arrival times without having to look at 50 new notifications.
I made it in Adalo and you can copy and improve upon the app here
One thing I'm thinking about
How do you future proof your career?
In light of recent job news, I’ve tried to introspect into the industry I’m in (oil and gas) and why the jobs I take seem to run into issues somewhere down the road.
Companies have ups and downs, so am I just unlucky with the ones I chose to work for or am I seeing a bigger pattern?
I compare this to dating and having the same problems come up with each breakup:
The one thing common between all of them is you
With that in mind, there are a few reasons that this could be happening:
The industry is trending further downward to the point that I will run into the same issue if I work in the same industry
The companies I pick are already in hot water and hiring me is postponing the inevitable
This is all out of my control and is a string of bad luck that can be marked up to coincidence
So what’s the alternative, I have a few options based on my financial situation:
Go back to school (ugh) and further education as well as build another network
Start building things online and develop a following
Pivot and network in another growing industry (tech, renewables, commercial construction)
I’d love feedback on other options or resources I can check out. Since Baton Rouge is a hotbed for oil and gas jobs, I’m looking for something in my current skillset. Remote work is becoming more common - but the oil and gas industry is slow to pick it up.

American made desks that are good for your health
I recently sold off my desk in preparation for a new one from Deskhaus - an adjustable desk manufacturer based in Michigan that has some sick setups and a few items on sale.
I was contemplating a company like Fully or Uplift, but opted for these desks because they seem to know their stuff and allow me to get just the desk, allowing me to get other attachments that will work with the desk without paying a marked up price.
I’ll be adding this to the building section of this newsletter once it comes in, and can’t wait to see how it works out!

The “sticky stuff” debate in Major League Baseball
This one’s a toughie.
The MLB made a rule that pitchers will be checked for anything sticky and other substances on the ball between every inning.
The reason behind this is because spin rates have been increasing on pitchers at a superhuman rate. Pitchers like Trevor Bauer - the most recent Cy Young winner - have called people and the league out on it, and it seems in typical bureaucratic form, an overreaction was in order.
Why does spin rate matter so much?
Because the more a ball spins the more movement it can produce over the same distance. That means sharper tails to breaking balls and even the potential for a straight pitch to take a dive without much effort.
What’s my opinion?
I’m more of a laissez faire type of guy. If you’re doing it and everyone else is doing it, I don’t have much of an issue. It’s something that you adapt to and get better in the process.
It’s hard enough to hit a baseball, and as a brother to a current minor league pitcher, if it gives him an edge to possibly move up, I’d love to see what he could do with another “tool” like this.
Have y’all heard anything about this? What are your thoughts?
